What the treatment involved
This patient presented after relocating to Malta, having completed approximately two years of orthodontic treatment abroad with an unsatisfactory outcome and a persistent functional problem: she could not bite properly on food, and had aesthetic concerns about the result.
Following a comprehensive clinical reassessment, a full treatment re-planning was undertaken. The revised objectives were narrow and explicit: correction of the posterior crossbite, and non-surgical management of the anterior open bite.
A carefully controlled orthodontic approach was implemented, prioritising stability, function and facial aesthetics over speed. The revised plan was completed in 11 months. At the end of treatment the patient had a significantly improved occlusion, and was satisfied with both her smile and her overall dental function.
This case illustrates why detailed re-evaluation matters in retreatment. Where previous therapy has not met expected standards, the answer is rarely to continue the original plan — it is to diagnose again from first principles.
